FESTINA LENTE ESTATE WINERY

Vendor Story

Festina Lente is Latin for “make haste slowly”. This accurately reflects a philosophy of taking the time with pride, and patience to accomplish things with diligence the first time to ferment Festina Lente's wines from bee to bottle.

The 5-acre winery hobby farm is situated in Langley, British Columbia's wine region. Owners Bill and Teresa Townsley began the process of growing and exploring the ecosystem that exists on the Campbell Valley microclimate in 2010. Little did they know that their lives there would not only be the most physically demanding project they have ever done, but the most rewarding as well!

The Townsleys have developed a drier and more sophisticated honey wine that can be appreciated for many years. Honey wine is the white wine that ages like a red, so white wine drinkers can now command room in the most refined cellars and enjoy the depth and breadth of ever-changing flavours over time.

As beekeepers and winemakers, it was a natural fit to explore the lost tradition of Mead or Honey Wines and in 2016, the Townsleys opened the winery with the intention of using ingredients that could be grown and produced on the farm. Teresa and Bill Townsley have kept true to their original intent of showcasing everything that can be grown in Langley.

“People really appreciate being able to see the tree that produces the fruit used in the creation of some of our wines, and with bees being so important to our food security, customers want to know where their wine is coming from and what kind of footprint it has.” - Teresa Townsley.

Mead is an ancient libation that is experiencing a resurgence for a new generation of environmentally conscious wine consumers. Without bee health, there would be no Mead. The Townsleys lead by example to show what is possible in a healthy and biodiverse farm. Mead made at Festina Lente Estate Winery is carbon forward and puts more back into the environment than it takes out.

More than ever, farming practices are affected by climate change is a priority, that biodiversity and mixed farming is helping farms thrive in the extreme weather events of the last few years.

“Farming is, by nature, a community builder. We rely on other farmers for their wisdom and support just as they rely on us.” -Teresa Townsley

In addition to that, local partnerships are key to being responsible stewards of the environment and Festina Lente Winery works with and promotes local small businesses wherever possible. Teresa is also the chair of the local Langley Farmers’ Institute and works in her off-time to promote agritourism and advocacy for farmers of all types and people who wish to consider farming as a career.

“I feel closer to my community than ever before, and we work hard to bring our products to local farm markets and through community-based events.” - Teresa Townsley

Because it tastes great and gives sophisticated wine consumers a craft experience of their own. Mead, or honey wine, is a fantastic beverage for people who are sensitive to tannins in wine. Because honey does not contain tannins, people can enjoy the wines without worry. Mead also lasts a lot longer once opened, up to 2 weeks.

“Our customers are everything to us. Many have become friends and we have been privileged to be a part of some of the most special celebrations of their lives. Our winery has been part of engagements, weddings, birthdays and many happy memories…we love being witnesses to so much happiness,” - Townsley's.

The Townsley's invite you to join them in appreciation of the best of the basics we love with a good dash of luxury thrown in for good measure.... Festina Lente!
